Visa subclass 485 visa – Temporary Graduate Post-Vocational Work Stream.

There are two main kinds of subclass 485 streams. One is the Temporary Graduate Post-Vocational Work Stream, and the other is the Post-Higher Education Work Stream.

We have assisted our clients with both 485 streams, and in this case study, we assisted our client to apply for the Temporary Graduate Post-Vocational Work Stream.

This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). It allows the graduating student to live and work in Australia temporarily for 18 months. The visa needs to be lodged within 6 months of completion of the students’ course.

Ranjeet Kumar, a young man from India, studied and completed Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery and Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management at one of Sydney’s hospitality management institutes in June 2020. His course took him 2 years and 3 months to complete. He approached us to help with his 485 Graduate Visa application.

AustraliaMigrate advised him that a chef skill assessment with TRA was required. As he had not completed a degree-level qualification, he could not apply for the Post-Higher Education Work Stream.

Fortunately, his occupation of chef was on the 485 list of occupation – Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).

We assisted Ranjeet in applying for his Skills Assessment with TRA, and he received a successful outcome. With a positive skill assessment, Ranjeet’s 485 application was lodged together with the other documents required at the lodgement stage, such as an English language test (IELTS or PTE). His visa was granted for 18 months which means he has time to build his work experience as a chef and find a suitable sponsor.

Ranjeet is now working with a leading hospitality group as a junior Chef in Sydney. The 18-month 485 visa graduate work stream gives him both unrestricted work rights to gain work experience as a chef and also the opportunity to build his eligibility for other visa subclasses. In the future, before his visa expires, he can consider lodging an application for a Subclass 407 training visa, or a Subclass 482 Skill in Demand Sponsorship program, or even a Subclass 189/491 Skilled Migration visa.
