For many visa holders, becoming an Australian citizen marks the final step in their immigration story. Australian citizens can vote, seek election in Parliament, work for the government and defence force, apply for an Australian passport, and re-enter the country freely. They can also sponsor family members for migration and access services such as Medicare, Centrelink, and HECS-HELP.

To become an Australian citizen, a successful application needs to be submitted. The fees for these applications are updated each year based on the consumer price index. The new fees are set out below and apply from 1 July 2024.
