Visitor Visas

There are different ways in which one can visit Australia as a tourist for short periods of time (usually up to 12 months from the date the visa is issued) for a holiday or to visit family or friends.

The Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) Visa (Subclass 976)

is issued online to people from particular countries and allows the holder a stay in Australia of up to 12 months (multiple entries of three months during each visit) during the life of the visa.

Visitor Short Stay (Subclass 676) Visa

is issued to people at Australian Embassies, Consulates or High Commissions and varies in the duration that the holder may stay in Australia depending upon the circumstances of the visa grant.

Family Sponsored Family Visitor (Subclass 679) Visa

is issued to people who have family members who are resident in Australia and want to visit them for a stay of up to 12 months. The Australian citizen or permanent resident is required to make a formal application for sponsorship. In some cases organisations may be able to act as sponsors.

eVisitors (Subclass 651)

is issued online to people from particular countries and allows the holder a stay in Australia of up to 3 months for tourism or business purposes.

Anyone wishing to visit Australia and applying for a visitor visa must meet the following minimum requirements:

• You must meet health and character requirements;
• You must have sufficient funds to meet all your expenses;
• You must demonstrate that you have an “incentive to return” to the country that you come from;
