Applying for a Job in Australia
In order for an Australian company to employ a person from overseas with no visa status in Australia they will need to sponsor them, which is usually done on a 457 visa. This can be issued from 6 months to 4 years and mostly is issued as a 4 year visa.
Offshore While Australian businesses may struggle to find someone suitable locally to fill their positions, there may be a certain amount of reluctance to embark on a 457 sponsorship as it carries certain obligations to the employer. However, there are thousands of people in Australia from overseas already on a 457 visa which reflects how many Australian employers have embraced and implemented 457 sponsorships and understand the value of them to their businesses.
A 457 visa provides an excellent stepping-stone to Permanent Residence either through Skilled Migration or through the Employer Nominated Scheme (ENS).
The Australian Government recognises the value of 457 visa holders to the Australian economy and is continuously endeavoring to streamline the procedures of these applications. In general, the time frame for the 457 sponsorship, nomination and visa applications is approximately 4 weeks.
Tips for Preparing a CV
- Do not make a CV long and provide unnecessary detail;
- Details in the profile should only include name, date of birth, address, email, cell and home phone details. Details such as marital status, children, driver’s license, police record, religion and gender should be omitted. Do not use a full page to provide these details. Present this information using the full width of the page, at the top of the page;
- This should be followed by a brief, clear and precise executive summary in a few lines about your qualifications and core skills and experience. Australian employers are more interested in your skills then your qualifications. Focus on your core skills and overall work experience but especially in the last 4 years. This should not be longer then about 5 lines;
- State main qualifications, where and when obtained;
- State employers’ names commencing with most current position;
- State the dates you have been employed with that employer from month/year to month/year;
- State the title of your position and then list your main duties and responsibilities listing any projects involved with;
Approaching the Job Market In general, you will find you have greater success by presenting your CV to a direct employer then a recruitment company. This is due to the sponsorship requirement which recruitment companies often do not wish to be bothered with;
If you feel you are really suited to a position and receive no response after emailing your CV, try different approaches to grab the employers’ attention such as calling them or emailing again in a polite fashion.
